Natural Treatments for Gum (Periodontal) Disease

The mouth, at any given time, is teeming with bacteria. It is normal to have hundreds of different types of bacteria in our mouth, as well as in our gastrointestinal tract, that are part of something called out bio-film. In each individual, our bio-film is different. This is due in part to genetics, dental habits, as well as overall health. If our overall health is poor, or our diet and hygiene, your mouth and system will become very acidic. In acidic environments, bad bacteria take over- most often anaerobic bacteria, which thrive in acidic environments. These anaerobic bacteria, often spirochetes and amoebas, are very aggressive. They break down collagen, and can cause overall destruction to your teeth and surrounding tissues.

Whenever you come to the dentist, the dentist or dental hygienist will examine the tissues. At least once a year, all of your tissue levels, or gum "pockets" are measured, allowing proper diagnosis of the level of gum disease present in their mouth. In a healthy mouth. the gums are pink and firm, and do not bleed. Bleeding of the gums is a sign of inflammation. If dental plaque is allowed to sit too long against your teeth, your body mounts an immune response against it, and treats it like a foreign body. The body uses the blood to bring white blood cells and other defense mechanisms to the surface, which are trying to fight this increase in bacterial invasion. This is why your gums will bleed easily when they are inflamed. In this environment, bad bacteria can take over, resulting in a deepening of the gum pockets, and gradual loss of the bone. The bone literally moves away from this harmful environment. This will lead to the eventual loss of the tooth.

Gum disease is insidious. Often, it causes no pain, to signal the patient of how much destruction is going on in their mouth. It is the number one cause of lawsuits in dentistry, due to the fact most people are not diagnosed properly at the dentist, and end up with many issues related to their overall health and tooth loss. Proper diagnosis involves:
1. the measurement of your gum pockets at least once or twice a year
2. assessing the level of the plaque, stain and tartar in your mouth
3. determining the correct type of cleaning for the patient, to intervene before their dental disease progesses
4. a microscope slide to check the bacteria present in your bio-film
5. decreasing the bacterial load with tools such as laser therapy.
6. homeopathics for integrative treatment and support ( such as ozone, peroxide, and iodine)
7. all natural amino acid based supplement for anxiety and pain

Dr. Vane uses this approach, as well as accessory tools, such as the laser, ozone therapy, and the microscope slide assessment to treat patients suffering from early or late stage gum disease. Dr. Vane is acutely aware of the relationship to the health of your mouth with your overall health. The mouth can at many times signal the presence of factors that can cause disease in other parts of your body, including, for example, the deleterious effects on the heart and relationship between the bacteria in gum disease with heart and vascular disease.

Dr. Vane wants for all patients to be able to treat their gum disease and keep their teeth, without the fear of unnecessary dental surgery or tooth loss. Using a natural approach, you can safely and effectively treat the gum disease and keep an healthy mouth.
